Mindfulness in Surgical Training (MiST): A Modified Mindfulness Curriculum for Surgical Residents.

Journal of surgical education January 1, 2025 Elizabeth Miazga, Brenna E Swift, Madalina Maxim et al.

A 12-week modified mindfulness curriculum tailored for busy surgical residents, involving weekly 30-minute group sessions and daily 15-minute home practice, reduced anxiety and increased surgical confidence among obstetrics and gynecology residents. Out of 61 eligible residents, 12 enrolled and 8 completed the course. Validated survey tools showed a statistically significant decrease in anxiety and increase in surgical confidence, but no change in burnout or surgical performance evaluations. Participants reported using mindfulness techniques in the operating room and at 3 months post-intervention. Time was the main barrier to participation, and residents felt the program should support ongoing mindfulness training to promote a positive culture shift.
