Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy Self-Directed Education in Depressive Symptom Remission: A Quality Improvement Study.

Journal of doctoral nursing practice April 15, 2026 Bethanie Simmons-Becil, Kirsten Pancione

An MBCT-guided self-education program improved depressive symptoms, quality of life, and functioning in adults with major depressive disorder. Over 8 weeks, the MBCT group showed a 41% decline in depression scores, a 56.06% increase in quality of life, and a 66.67% improvement in function compared to treatment as usual. The program combined cognitive behavioral therapy techniques with mindful meditation in a self-education format, aiming to maintain remission and reduce relapse. The findings suggest that such a program can offer accessible, evidence-based support for those with recurrent depression and limited access to mental health care.
