The impact of mindfulness practice on physician burnout: A scoping review
Frontiers in Psychology September 20, 2022 Hani Malik, Carrie Amani Annabi
Mindfulness practice reduces emotional exhaustion and depersonalization while improving mood, stress responses, and vigor in physicians. It also increases self-awareness, compassion, and empathy. A scoping review of 31 studies found that mindfulness benefits mental health and well-being, but the research often overlooks healthcare leadership, systems-level culture, and practices. The review suggests that a mindful and compassionate physician leader is crucial for addressing practice gaps, prioritizing staff mental health, and fostering innovation.
