Open and closed loops: A computational approach to attention and consciousness

Attention and consciousness are often proposed as independent, but their elusive natures make studying their interaction difficult. This paper presents a computational framework that treats both as large-scale, functionally and structurally different processes embedded in a biologically inspired architecture spanning stimulus to response. The architecture assumes general independence but strong interactions between attention and consciousness, and it emphasizes that these functions must gradually develop through learning.
