Mysticism and the inner psyche in the novel Hilang Dalam Dekapan Semeru: A symbolic and psychological analysis

Journal of Language, Literature, Social and Cultural Studies July 9, 2026 Zahwa Aliya Rastiani, Afita Putri Korindri, Mitha Adinda Kusumaningrum et al.

An analysis of the novel Hilang Dalam Dekapan Semeru identifies symbols of mysticism—such as a woman in white, frankincense, offerings, dolls, free-range chicken eggs, and seven-faced flowers—and examines climbers' mystical experiences including altered consciousness, anxiety, hallucinations, and extreme emotions. Each symbol functions as spiritual communication reflecting Javanese beliefs in the supernatural. The research uses systematic content analysis to encode and interpret textual patterns. The study relates these findings to transpersonal psychology, which compares spiritual and psychological experiences, confirming that the novel portrays mysticism symbols, mystical psychology, and spirituality connecting humans and the supernatural within Javanese culture.
