Abstract
This article examines pancognitivism, a philosophical conception of the structure and evolution of the universe based on the inseparable unity and ontological equality of the material and cognitive aspects of reality. Its principal concepts are presented: the individual, cognitive content, cognitive compromise, and cognitive evolution. An individual is defined as a relatively distinct organized whole possessing its own capacities to sustain its existence and integrity. These capacities constitute its cognitive content, inseparable from its material organization. Cognitive compromises are considered a mechanism through which the capacities of interacting individuals change and new levels of organization emerge. Pancognitivism is compared with classical cognitivism, connectionism, embodied cognition, autopoiesis, enactivism, panpsychism, and process philosophy. Cognitive evolution is proposed as one aspect of the unified evolution of the universe, encompassing individuals of both living and nonliving nature.
