Abstract
Abstract This chapter considers a range of topics relevant to developing a positive view of human beings: the role of metaphors in our self-understanding, the bodymind, the nature of the self, the significance of our social relationships, Charles Taylor’s theory of the internalization of the self, autonomy, sex and gender, and consciousness. It argues for views on each of these topics, emphasizing throughout the significance of one’s social worlds and social entanglements. It aims to offer positive alternative views of human beings, which are not offered as one-size-fits-all views, but depend on the aspects of human beings that one wishes to emphasize and understand. It draws on poetry, history, anthropology, philosophy, and science to make its case.
