Abstract

The Advanced Certificate Program in Contemplative Clinical Practice at Smith College School for Social Work emphasizes the use of contemplative practices to develop awareness in two areas: the spiritual aspects of the therapeutic relationship and the influence of the clinician's spirituality on the therapeutic process. Utilizing responses from a qualitative questionnaire that was administered to students who completed the program in 2008, this article describes the ways in which the program inspired change in the spiritual lives and clinical practices of its students. Some of these changes included renewed dedication to the regular practice of contemplative activities and a greater ability to attend to spiritual issues in the therapeutic process.
