Topics Meditation
Key findings The author presents a reflective account of a single therapy session with an immigrant client who had experienced physical abuse and a workplace accident, arguing that neither her own immigrant experience nor her clinical social work training prepared her for the session, which she describes as a major learning experience.

Abstract

Abstract: When I first met Ms. Nair, I expected my session with her to be no different from those with my other clients. Instead, it turned out to be one of the greatest learning experiences of my life. Ms. Nair came from India and had been physically abused by her husband before and after her migration to Canada and was also adjusting to her new life in this new country. She had recently been involved in a workplace accident and was receiving mental health support. Neither my personal experience as an immigrant nor my professional knowledge as a clinical social worker prepared me for this unusual therapy session.
