Abstract

Introspective research into subjective experiences of meditation is constrained by an inability to document meditative experiences in a manner that addresses their irreducible qualities. Meditators' integration attempts are negatively affected due to this methodological gap. Thus, more responsive documentation methods need to be developed within introspective research. This paper theorizes that documentation failure in introspective research stems from a fundamental linguistic flaw embedded in how pre-linguistic felt-significance relates to downstream documentation methods. During a subjective meditative event, an experience possesses felt-meaning, defined as the direct perception of a quantity of meaning within the event itself. This felt-meaning is pre-linguistic and serves as the raw material out of which expressed meaning—the formal linguistic description—is constructed. The primary cause of documentation difficulty arises when pre-linguistic events are perceived to be devoid of felt-significance. When an experience presents no identifiable pattern from which to construct a linguistic description, generating expressed meaning becomes increasingly difficult, exposing a hard limit of language itself.
