Abstract
Abstract: Spiritual experiences could be beneficial in the context of clinical interventions and may become an important avenue for helping people who suffer from mental illness. Mindfulness and other meditation practices, which can sometimes give rise to spiritual experiences, have become a standard practice in healthcare. More recently, psychedelic compounds are poised to make a breakthrough in psychiatry and psychotherapy the likes of which have not been seen for decades. Each of these approaches, and psychedelics in particular, brings the study of spiritual experiences to the center stage of mainstream medical, scholarly, and scientific discourse. This chapter cautiously considers how the potential upsides of spiritual experiences could be harnessed in clinical contexts.
