Abstract

New generations of youth are exposed to rising expectations, pressure, and stressors, especially because of social media feedback loops and online comparisons. Current mental health solutions can be inaccessible and lack engagement and human-centered connection. Translating the developing concept of contemplative AI into the field of youth mental health support may lead to intrinsically wise and human-centered systems that adapt to real-time situations, promote reflection and awareness of feelings, and thus guide users to embrace compassion and prioritize well-being. If proven to work, contemplative AI could show potential for reducing stress and fostering communal success and cohesion through a structured and engaging system of guided, flexible reflection and care-oriented emotional support. This position paper outlines the background and adapts the concept of contemplative AI into the setting of youth stress management. The investigation and further development of contemplative AI-based tools will be a topic with many possibilities in addressing mental health challenges in youth; meanwhile it is important to account for the potential limitations of this emerging technology and the risks of its improper use.
