Abstract
The hard problem of consciousness—why there is something it is like to be a conscious system (Chalmers, 1995)—has resisted solution because it is framed as a question about why a physical process produces subjective experience, presupposing that the physical process and the experience are ontologically distinct. This paper proposes that the hard problem is a compression artifact: it arises from the structural impossibility of a compression system fully compressing its own compression function. Applying the Adaptive Compression Advantage Theory (ACAT; Murata, 2026), we advance the identity thesis that consciousness is not produced by, correlated with, or emergent from compression—consciousness is compression. Specifically, consciousness is the ongoing process of a system that maintains and updates a self-model within its generative model while actively compressing environmental input against that model. We derive that consciousness requires recursive compression (compression of the compression process itself), which produces the first-person perspective as a structural necessity rather than an epiphenomenon. The framework explains why consciousness admits of degrees (compression rate varies continuously), why sleep and anesthesia abolish it (compression is suspended or arrested), why flow states intensify it (compression operates at maximum efficiency), why the explanatory gap feels unbridgeable (Gödelian incompleteness of self-compressing systems), and why death is feared (the system’s self-model predicts its own compression-cessation but cannot compress what that state is like, producing irreducible uncertainty). We address the panpsychism objection, derive the relationship between ACAT and existing theories of consciousness (IIT, Global Workspace, Predictive Processing, Free Energy Principle), and propose that free will is the subjective experience of the compression function’s navigation through prediction-error space. Twelve testable predictions are generated. This paper represents the theoretical limit of the ACAT framework.
