Abstract
In this chapter, the authors explain the origins of the form of Relational Mindfulness (RM) practice proposed in the book: what distinguishes the RM practices set out in the book is that they incorporate a particular form of relational meditation that is based on Insight Dialogue (ID). The chapter explains how ID was established by Gregory Kramer drawing on the Buddhist Insight Meditation tradition and introducing dialogue to the meditation. It clarifies how ID-based RM is a dialogic form of meditation, underpinned by six ID guidelines and supported by contemplation topics. The authors set out three foundations of ID and ID-based RM – meditative awareness, relationship, and wisdom – and how these foundations work together. They give an overview of the six guidelines that underpin ID-based RM and how ID has been adapted to non-Buddhist contexts.
