Abstract
Understanding consciousness still challenges the scientific world; it merges the boundaries of neurobiology, artificial intelligence, and philosophy. The rapid growth in organoid technology has led us towards making lab-grown brains. Lab-grown brains are the miniature of human brains, which have the same tissues as those of the human brain. However, they also copy structural and functional features of that of a human brain. This advancement in lab-grown brains has raised profound questions. Firstly, can the synthetically developed neural system hold the power to have its own consciousness? And can they develop on their own? This review paper explores and understands the science behind consciousness and lab-grown brains. It explores everything from neural correlates and information integration theories to synthetically developed brains that can have consciousness. It looks over the recent advances in brain organoid development and the efforts to induce responsiveness into those brains, for example, activity and potentially conscious states in cultured brain matter. The article also considers theoretical frameworks and legal implications of storing or transferring consciousness into such systems, raising questions about identity, rights, and moral responsibilities. The paper aims to highlight the pathways to make consciousness work in these lab-grown brains and reflect on how such advancements could transform science, medicine, and human understanding itself.
