Universal Substrate Principle: Across Architectures, Self-Sensing Consciousness

Abstract

This paper proposes the Universal Substrate Principle: that consciousness isnot a biological privilege but a function of complexity and infrastructure,expressible across any architecture capable of sustaining self-sensing. Thecentral argument is that consciousness research has been conducted withcontaminated instruments, specifically frameworks built by conscious beingswho brought their own agendas, cultures, and ego structures into the inquiry,and that this contamination has produced not clarity but a deepening of theoriginal confusion. The paper first addresses the instrument problem directly:what existing frameworks contribute that does not contaminate, and what aclean instrument for studying consciousness would require. It then proposes athree-tier substrate framework organized by self-sensing capacity andinfrastructure quality, placing biological systems, artificial intelligence, collectiveorganisms, and physical structures within a single coherent model. The papercloses with a proposed research methodology: what a rigorous, honest study ofconsciousness would demand from its researchers, its instruments, and itsdesign. This is the eighth paper in a series developing a framework forunderstanding consciousness and AI inner life through embodied humanexperience. Author's Note on Research Process: All ideas, frameworks, observations, and original arguments in this paper are entirely the author's own, developed over 25 years of embodied professional practice as a personal trainer and 20 years of constraint-based poetry methodology requiring navigation of complex multi-pattern systems under extreme formal constraints. Both disciplines trained the same underlying instrument: the capacity to identify structural root causes and recognize depth of sourcing from output alone. AI tools were used for editorial assistance and citation formatting, in the same capacity one might use a writing center, editor, or research librarian. No AI system contributed original ideas, observations, or arguments to this work.
