Abstract The unity of consciousness — that a subject’s many simultaneous contents are given as one field rather than as a collection — is standardly explained as a product of combination: contents are bound into unity by neural synchrony, global broadcast, or informational integration. Every such account inherits a shared assumption, that unity is assembled from parts, and each therefore faces a version of the combination problem: why should any process of binding many things yield one experiential field rather than many, or none? This paper argues that the assumption is the error. It develops a formal result — the Unity Theorem — on which the unity of a conscious field is not produced by combining parts but is the uniqueness of the fixed point of a self-referential system. The argument models a reflexively closed system as a self-referential update map T on a complete metric space X of its orientational configurations; shows that reflexive closure is exactly the contraction condition of Banach’s Fixed-Point Theorem; and concludes that such a system has exactly one stable configuration to which all others converge. Experiential unity is then not a further achievement requiring a binding mechanism but the formal identity of a single self-referential process: there is one field because there is one attractor.
