Abstract
Background: Breast cancer is a global health issue that not only affects physical health but also causes psychological distress and a decline in quality of life. Various non-pharmacological interventions have been developed to help patients adapt to the disease, one of which is mindfulness. Evidence regarding the effectiveness of mindfulness in breast cancer patients remains inconsistent, necessitating a systematic synthesis of research.
Purpose: To analyze the effectiveness of mindfulness interventions on psychological distress and quality of life in breast cancer patients.
Method: A systematic literature review was conducted based on the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Literature searches were performed across PubMed, Scopus, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar for articles published between 2020 and 2026. Article selection utilized the PICOS framework, and quality assessment was carried out using the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) Critical Appraisal Checklist.
Results: Based on eight articles meeting the inclusion criteria, the synthesis results indicate that mindfulness interventions are effective in reducing anxiety, depression, stress, psychological distress, fear of cancer recurrence, stigma, and body image distress. Mindfulness interventions also improve quality of life across various dimensions, including physical, psychological, social, spiritual, and cognitive aspects.
Conclusion: Mindfulness interventions are an effective non-pharmacological approach for reducing psychological distress and improving the quality of life of breast cancer patients. Integrating mindfulness into oncology nursing care has the potential to support more holistic and patient-centered care.
