Abstract

University students frequently encounter high levels of academic stress due to demanding coursework, performance expectations, and transitional life challenges. Excessive stress not only undermines mental well-being but also negatively impacts learning efficiency, concentration, and academic achievement. In recent years, mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) have gained attention as effective, non-pharmacological approaches to enhancing psychological resilience and academic outcomes. This study investigated the impact of MBIs on academic stress and performance among university students, drawing on both theoretical foundations and empirical evidence. The research employed a mixed-methods approach comprising a quasi-experimental design and qualitative interviews. Participants included undergraduate and postgraduate students who were assigned either to an intervention group receiving an eight-week mindfulness program or to a control group continuing with standard academic routines. Academic stress levels were measured using standardized self-report scales, while performance was assessed through cumulative grade point averages (CGPAs) and task-based cognitive assessments. Qualitative data provided insights into students’ subjective experiences of mindfulness practices, including meditation, mindful breathing, and body awareness exercises. Findings revealed that students in the intervention group reported significantly lower academic stress post-intervention compared to the control group. They also demonstrated enhanced concentration, time management, and exam performance. Additionally, mindfulness practices were associated with improved emotional regulation and reduced anxiety, thereby supporting an indirect but crucial pathway to academic success. Qualitative feedback further highlighted that students perceived mindfulness as a practical strategy for balancing academic and personal responsibilities. This study underscores the potential of MBIs to alleviate academic stress while fostering better academic outcomes. Integrating mindfulness training into university curricula and student support services may serve as a proactive measure to address mental health challenges and promote holistic student development.
