Abstract
Miller, Brincat and Roy (2026) argue that cognition and consciousness arise from analog computations implemented by traveling brain waves, with alpha/beta rhythms acting as mobile spatiotemporal stencils over gamma sensory processing, ephaptic field–spike coupling providing fast top-down control, and consciousness depending on the integrity of large-scale wave organization rather than on specific receptors or cell types. In November 2025 I proposed a formal model in which the cerebral electromagnetic (EM) field, treated in Fock space, is the physical substrate of informational integration, with an operational measure Phi = S_E x C x log(1+D), a critical threshold Phi_c for macroscopic phase coherence, an informational horizon (Markov blanket), and downward causation of the coherent field on synaptic dynamics. This note maps the two frameworks without collapsing them. Their overlap is substantial on the non-epiphenomenal status of field dynamics, mixed selectivity under wave control, ephaptic feedback, and the anesthesia signature of large-scale wave disruption. Their divergence is equally clear: Miller et al. remain within classical continuum electrodynamics and operational analog computation; the 2025 model adds a quantum-field layer (mode entanglement, U(1) symmetry breaking, coherent-state robustness) that is not required by their account and must not be smuggled into it. I translate their alpha/beta stencils into mode structure, restate three of the 2025 predictions as joint empirical tests, and mark the classical/quantum boundary that future work should keep explicit. Maps Miller, Brincat & Roy (2026) analog wave computation onto the 2025 Fock-space EM-field model of consciousness, without collapsing classical and quantum layers. Includes a comparative table and three joint empirical tests (J1–J3).
