Abstract

Abstract This chapter focuses on the integration of motivational interviewing and mindfulness strategies in treating patients with mood and anxiety disorders. Literature on the effect of motivational interviewing and of mindfulness and mindfulness-based interventions on anxiety and other mood disorders is reviewed. Breathing techniques such as square or box breathing, grounding techniques such a 5-4-3-2-1, and mediation techniques such as walking and sitting meditations are discussed as approaches to managing anxiety and depressive symptoms. The chapter reviews how motivational interviewing and mindfulness-based interventions can be used together while preserving their shared principles. A clinical vignette is provided to illustrate the integrated use of these techniques.
