Abstract
In this chapter, I will dive into the preparatory phase, a vital component of psychedelic-assisted therapy, emphasizing its role in creating the optimal conditions for a meaningful therapeutic outcome. I will talk about how the therapist, acting as a guide, adopts a directive yet empowering role to facilitate client readiness through the use of specific practices and an intentional preparation process. I will also explore key aspects of the preparation phase, including the setting of intentions, the cultivation of mindfulness, the use of breathwork techniques for nervous system regulation, and adherence to traditional dieta recommendations involving dietary adjustments, sexual abstinence, and media detoxification. Through clinical vignettes, I will illustrate how thorough preparation can profoundly influence clients’ psychedelic experiences, enhancing their emotional resilience and promoting lasting change. Finally, I will explore the importance of managing client expectations, ensuring psychological safety, and educating clients on how to navigate the potentially challenging aspects of their psychedelic journeys, including ego dissolution and altered perceptions.
