Abstract
This chapter examines the essential role of personal experience in psychedelic therapy, through a raw and reflective account of the author’s first Ayahuasca ceremony. It illustrates how direct experience with psychedelics can become a profound source of clinical wisdom over time. Drawing on Bateson’s systemic theories and the Taoist concept of “no-mind,” the author explores how psychedelic journeys challenge the ego, dissolve boundaries, and reorient one’s understanding of self and others. The chapter argues that therapists cannot fully grasp or guide psychedelic processes through theory alone; lived experience offers an embodied understanding that transforms how we sit with clients. Integrating clinical casework and philosophical reflection, this chapter calls for a shift in training models, asserting that therapists who have navigated altered states themselves bring deeper presence, humility, and ethical clarity into the therapeutic encounter.
