Abstract This chapter examines the various biological factors that may be involved in depersonalization/derealization (dpdr) and depersonalization/derealization disorder (DDD). The role of sensory association cortical areas and corticocortical dysconnectivity models are discussed, vis-à-vis the perceptual alterations characteristic of the disorder. The role of the limbic system and the cortico-limbic disconnection hypothesis, as relating to the hypoemotionality of DDD, are explored. Findings related to the autonomic system and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis are presented. The putative role of the serotonergic and endogenous opioid systems is examined. Finally, we discuss brain rhythm findings related to dissociation, as well as the neuroscience of selfhood.
