Abstract

Rhabdomyolysis is a relatively rare, but potentially seriouscomplication of various diseases. Muscular injuryand resultant release of electrolytes, myoglobin andother enzymatic proteins e.g. creatine kinase (CK) intocirculation may result in multi-organ failure requiring anextensive treatment. Non-traumatic causes of rhabdomyolysis,like poisonings, appear to be much more frequentthan traumatic causes. We present the case of a patientwho developed exceptionally massive rhabdomyolysis,with CK up to 516 455 U/l, after ingestion of a relativelysmall dose of a novel psychoactive substance knownas “Alice in Wonderland”. Laboratory quantification wasperformed using a validated LC-MS/MS method in awhole blood sample.
