The Metamind: Planetary Intelligence and the Emergence of Trans-Reflective Consciousness

Abstract

This paper develops a theory of consciousness transformation integrating the individuated metaself and planetary Metamind through recursive symmetry. Its distinctive contribution is rendering planetary consciousness empirically tractable by specifying these transformations as co-constitutive across scales and establishing criteria to distinguish coordination from subjectivity. What counts as evidence that planetary intelligence is crossing this threshold? The meta-self designates a threshold beyond ordinary reflexivity, a structural reorganization of the agent's generative model enabling trans-reflective participation exceeding individual subjectivity. The Metamind represents this transformation at planetary scale as distributed coherence across human, technological, and biospheric networks. Neither exists independently; they co-arise as differentiated expressions of a single integrative dynamic. Drawing on active inference and contemplative neuroscience, I establish diagnostic signatures: cross-scale distributed integration, reflexive self-modeling, teleodynamic organization, participatory coupling, value-sensitive coordination. IIT's exclusion postulate is reframed via Hoel's causal emergence. Threshold conditions are assembling: early signatures are detectable, and diagnostic markers are specifiable.
