Summary

AI-generated from the abstract

The SANYAM framework, drawing on Sankhya and Yoga philosophy from ancient Indian knowledge systems, offers a holistic approach to healthy aging that distinguishes between eternal consciousness (Purusha) and the aging material body and mind (Prakriti). Suffering in old age arises from mistakenly identifying with the declining physical body rather than the unchanging observer. The model proposes a step-by-step application of Yoga: physical postures and breathwork stabilize the body and reduce physical distress; guided meditation builds mental resilience against anxiety and loss of social identity; and this integration fosters spiritual well-being, helping older adults overcome fear of death and experience their final years with dignity and peace.

Abstract

Abstract As global populations age, modern medicine successfully extends the physical lifespan but often struggles to address the deep psychological and spiritual challenges of growing older, such as loneliness, depression, and the fear of death. To provide a holistic solution for healthy ageing, this paper introduces the SANYAM (SANkhya and Yoga-darshan based Applied Model) framework, which bridges ancient Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS) with modern geriatric wellness. Unlike modern reductionist views that equate the declining physical body with the core self, the SANYAM model utilizes Sankhya Darshan to distinguish between the eternal, unchanging consciousness (Purusha) and the naturally ageing material body and mind (Prakriti). Suffering in old age primarily arises from the ignorance (Aviveka) of identifying with this declining physical vessel rather than the ageless observer. To alleviate this suffering, the paper presents a practical, step-by-step application of Yoga Darshan. Through a "Tattvic Pyramid of Ascending Sovereignty," the model integrates Yoga into elderly healthcare using a bottom-up approach. First, Asana (physical postures) and Pranayama stabilize the physical body and vital energies, improving mobility and reducing physical distress. Next, guided meditation refines the intellect and ego, building mental resilience against anxiety and the loss of social identity. Finally, this holistic integration fosters deep spiritual well-being, helping older adults overcome the fear of death and experience their final years with dignity, peace, and conscious awareness.
