Abstract

The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali Authors: Oluwo Jolaoso Osainbola, Ph.D. | Ajarn Shaman Shu | Shri Suryanarayana Swamikal | Robert Shumake, Ph.D. Affiliation: Buddha University® & Orisha University This paper offers a comprehensive, initiated insider reinterpretation of Patañjali's eightfold system (aṣṭāṅga) through a Dravidian-Tamil Siddha lens, placing the Yoga Sutras in conversation with South Indian contemplative science and African initiatory training systems. Building on the authors' book, The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, the study articulates a methodology of emic autoethnography grounded in initiation—Hindu/Dravidian (Śaiva-Siddha), Thai Buddhist (Ajarn lineage), and Yoruba/Ifá (Oluwo, the highest rank of Ifa initiation)—combined with textual-historical analysis of Sanskrit and Tamil sources and comparative ethnography. The analysis re-reads yama-niyama as congruent with ethical-mnemonic technologies emphasized in the Tamil Siddha corpus (e.g., Tirumantiram) while highlighting resonances with Yoruba iwa pẹ̀lẹ́ (excellence of character) and ritual discipline. Asana and pranayama are contextualized within South Indian somatic and breath-control arts and read alongside medieval developments that influenced later Hatha traditions. Pratyāhāra through samādhi are related to Tamil Saiva interiorization practices, soruba samadhi (embodied gnosis), Thai forest meditation trajectories (sīla-samādhi-paññā), and African initiatory seclusion that cultivates altered states and moral transformation. We propose a "spiritual reparations paradigm" as an ethical framework for cross-cultural practice: it seeks to honor source lineages, repair extractive histories, and guide contemporary yogic training in relationally responsible ways. The findings suggest that Patañjali's sūtras, without being reduced to any single tradition, can be read coherently through a Dravidian optic that privileges embodied nonduality and ritual pragmatics, while the aṣṭāṅga discipline shares structural affinities with African initiatory pedagogies. For practitioners, this integrative reading provides practical protocols attuned to ethical precepts, breath and attention training, and culturally accountable implementation. A Note on Scholarly Positioning: The lead author writes from a position that is virtually unprecedented in academic scholarship, holding initiatory titles across multiple living spiritual traditions simultaneously — Ajarn (Thai Buddhist authority and master teacher), Oluwo (Yorùbá/Ifá high priest, the highest rank of initiation in the Ifá tradition), and Swamikal (Hindu/Dravidian spiritual authority and initiate) — in addition to standing as a PhD scholar.
