Abstract

When something is plainly in view, are we always aware of seeing it, and is awareness always beneficial? We tested whether a clearly visible but task-irrelevant feature can fail to become reportable while still guiding behavior. Across four experiments (N = 584), participants viewed meaningful two-part objects under prolonged, unmasked exposure, with only one-part task-relevant. When unexpectedly asked to report the irrelevant part, participants performed at chance; yet the same feature reliably guided choices in a perceptual comparison task (55% and 60% correct; chance = 33%). The advantage belonged to the least aware: participants who reported noticing no change outperformed those who did, an inverse relationship confirmed in a large preregistered replication. Awareness is not simply stronger perception, but a selective transformation of what we see.
