Magical Thinking and Mystical Experience: An Exploration of Delusional Disorder in Schizophrenic Patients.

Iran J Nurs Midwifery Res September 11, 2025

This paper explores the relationship between magical thinking and mystical experiences in individuals diagnosed with schizophrenic delusional disorder. It examines how delusional beliefs may overlap with or be distinguished from mystical experiences, considering psychological and cultural frameworks. The authors argue that while both involve non-ordinary beliefs, mystical experiences are typically integrated into a coherent worldview and associated with positive outcomes, whereas delusional thinking in schizophrenia is often distressing and disconnected from shared reality. The paper highlights the importance of context and personal meaning in differentiating pathological delusions from spiritually significant experiences.
