Neural mechanisms of mindfulness and meditation: Evidence from neuroimaging studies.

Neuroimaging studies indicate that mindfulness and meditation practices are associated with changes in brain structure and function, particularly in regions involved in attention, emotion regulation, and self-awareness. The evidence suggests that these practices can lead to increased gray matter density in the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex, as well as reduced activity in the amygdala, which is linked to stress and anxiety. However, the field faces methodological challenges, including small sample sizes and variability in meditation techniques, which limit the strength of conclusions. Overall, the findings support the idea that meditation induces neuroplastic changes, but more rigorous research is needed to confirm these effects.
