Prevalence and patterns of use of mantra, mindfulness and spiritual meditation among adults in the United States.

BMC Complement Altern Med June 15, 2017

An estimated 14.2% of U.S. adults have practiced some form of meditation in the past 12 months, with mindfulness meditation being the most common (9.9%), followed by spiritual meditation (5.4%) and mantra meditation (3.9%). The analysis of data from the 2017 National Health Interview Survey shows that meditation use varies by sociodemographic characteristics, with higher prevalence among women, middle-aged adults, and those with higher education levels. Many adults who meditate also use other complementary health approaches such as yoga or chiropractic care.
