Cannabis, Psychedelics, and Other Substance Use to Manage Premenstrual Symptoms: A Survey Study.

Journal of women's health (2002) June 19, 2026 Michelle Nazareth, Victoria Paone, Mary Elizabeth Yaden et al.

Cannabis is the most commonly used substance to manage premenstrual mood symptoms, reported by 30.0% of respondents, followed by alcohol (16.1%) and psychedelics (5.9%). Among those with premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), use is higher: 51.5% use cannabis and 16.2% use psychedelics. Premenstrual symptom severity positively correlates with luteal-phase cannabis and nicotine use. Cannabis and psychedelics are used more frequently in the luteal phase than the follicular phase. Among 45 perimenopausal respondents, cannabis was most frequently used to manage symptoms. This was the first survey to assess psychedelic use across the menstrual cycle.
