In San Juan, Argentina—a province with many rock art sites, few of which have been systematically studied—the rare interpretive attempts have taken a ritual perspective. This paper presents five cases that together represent all local sites whose iconographic repertoire has been interpreted, arguing that such an approach is well-suited to understanding much of the area's rock art. The findings suggest that local rock art may be linked to ritual activities possibly dating to before the Common Era, and that some of these manifestations may have shamanistic characteristics.
