Online Mindfulness-Based Cancer Recovery Program for People Living with Cancer in Alberta: A Randomized Wait-List Controlled Trial

Libraries and Cultural Resources January 1, 2015 Kristin A. Zernicke

An online synchronous Mindfulness-Based Cancer Recovery (MBCR) program for distressed cancer survivors who lacked access to in-person MBCR was feasible and improved outcomes. In a randomized wait-list controlled trial with 62 participants, those receiving immediate online MBCR showed moderate improvements in mood disturbance, stress symptoms, spirituality, and mindful acting with awareness compared to the wait-list group. Younger participants had greater reductions in stress and increases in spirituality and non-reactivity. Men experienced greater posttraumatic growth than women. Completion rates matched in-person MBCR, and participants would recommend the program. The intervention also reduced fatigue and sympathetic nervous system arousal.
