On the Asclepian spirit and the future of psychoanalysis.

The Asclepian myth reveals early theories and practices of ancient medicine and gave rise to the healing symbol of the staff and serpent. The multi-modal therapy at Asclepian temples often culminated in dream incubation. Dreams from modern physicians in analysis show that while external practices have changed, the underlying dynamics of healers across eras reflect a common humanity. Modern therapists have rediscovered the use of dreams and created new explanatory myths. Future developments may link the ancient psychosomatic model with current psychopharmacological interventions in psychodynamic psychotherapy. The Asclepian emphasis on spirituality is gaining recognition among psychoanalysts and scientists.
