In the Americas, early cultures across vast distances and times may have shared a common worldview and symbolic system. This article compares two representative images from widely separated regions and periods: a complex zoo-anthropomorphic figure from the Chavín culture of the north-central Andes (1500-300 BCE) holding a San Pedro cactus staff, one of the earliest ritual uses of this sacred plant in South American shamanism; and a rock pictograph from the La Aguada culture of northwestern Argentina (400-1100 CE) showing a striking structural similarity. The authors interpret these hybrid figures as metaphorical representations of the multidimensional cosmos, based on their intricate iconographic elements referencing different cosmological planes.
