Ketamine, traditionally used as a dissociative anesthetic, has emerged as a promising therapeutic alternative for treatment-resistant depression (TRD), a challenging clinical condition where conventional treatments fail to relieve symptoms. This integrative review evaluated the efficacy of ketamine in adults with TRD, analyzing randomized clinical trials, controlled trials, and recent systematic reviews. Results indicate that ketamine provides rapid and significant relief of depressive symptoms, with sustained effects in some cases. However, adverse effects such as dissociation, elevated blood pressure, and risk of abuse were observed, requiring caution in clinical use. Further research is needed to optimize administration protocols, minimize adverse effects, and assess efficacy in specific populations such as the elderly.
