A sample of ayahuasca drink containing the alkaloids harmalol, harmol, harmane, and N,N-dimethyltryptamine was tested in forced swimming and open-field tests. In the forced swimming test, the doses decreased immobility time in a dose-inversely proportional manner. Doses of 2.5 mg/kg and 10 mg/kg of ayahuasca also reduced locomotor activity and vertical exploration in the open-field test. The 2.5 mg/kg dose led to a 44.95% decrease in locomotor activity and a 62.12% decrease in vertical exploration. An inversely proportional relationship between dose and effect is hypothesized; the 2.5 mg/kg dose showed antidepressant-like activity.
