Abstract The scholarly, legal, and regulatory discourse on deliberately altered states of consciousness lacks a neutral vocabulary: its inherited terms — hallucinogen, psychedelic, entheogen — each embed a verdict on the nature of the states they name, forcing a position before argument begins.
