This review paper examines the roles of psychological, genetic, biological, and environmental factors in the pathogenesis of depression and its symptoms. The authors argue that, alongside antidepressant drugs, various non-pharmacological interventions—including psychotherapies such as interpersonal therapy, problem-solving therapy, mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT), mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), as well as yoga—show potential effectiveness in alleviating depression. The authors conclude that these psychotherapies and yoga techniques are more effective than medication therapies alone.
