Exploring the Ethical and Technical Data of Machine Consciousness: Hazards, Implications, and Future Directions

This paper surveys the field of machine consciousness, examining its technical, ethical, and philosophical dimensions. It notes that while AI systems can learn and solve problems, true awareness remains elusive. The authors argue that if machines became sentient, determining their moral standing and rights would be crucial, and they highlight ethical concerns about creating sentient beings, mistreating sentient machines, and turning them off. Philosophically, machine consciousness could challenge our concepts of identity, consciousness, and life. The paper aims to outline the current research status, identify risks and ethical issues, and offer recommendations for responsible development, promoting informed and transparent discourse.
