Dreaming, insomnia, and choreographic creativity of young female dancers: a cross-sectional preliminary study

Creativity Studies May 12, 2025 Masaki Nishida, Amina Goro

Among 46 female contemporary dancers, those who create choreography report a weaker link between nightmares and subjective insomnia than dancers who do not choreograph. Nightmare frequency correlated with sleep duration and quality in both groups, but in choreographers it also correlated with positive thinking tendencies. The findings suggest that creativity in dance is related to dream frequency, though less tied to dream content, and that choreographers may possess psychological resilience that buffers the insomnia–nightmare association.
