The phenomenon of the Trinity

Stellenbosch Theological Journal June 19, 2026 Dr. Khegan M. Delport

Jean-Luc Marion's approach to trinitarian theology prioritizes divine givenness over metaphysical and epistemological models. He argues that revelation is not merely a transfer of knowledge but an event of divine self-donation exceeding conceptual capture. Through reading scripture and patristic and medieval sources, Marion traces the historical development of revelation and proposes an account of trinitarian experience whereby believers are taken into the phenomenal circulation of the Trinity. Through an anamorphosis of the Spirit, human perception and desire are reshaped, enabling participation in divine life. The essay's author argues for greater emphasis on hermeneutics and spiritual training of perception to cultivate discernment of phenomena and enculturate believers to receive revelation's normativity.
