Mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) as sole intervention for non-somatisation chronic non-cancer pain (CNCP): protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials

BMJ Open May 1, 2015 L. Leung, Han Han, Mary I Martin et al.

This systematic review and meta-analysis protocol describes a planned evaluation of mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) for chronic non-cancer pain (CNCP). Chronic pain affects up to 50% of the global population and is inadequately managed by opioids and other invasive interventions. Previous reviews have included heterogeneous studies. The authors aim to provide an updated, critical assessment by including only randomized controlled trials that use MBSR as the main intervention for non-somatisation CNCP. Outcome measures will be pain scores and disability scales. Data will be meta-analyzed using a random effects model, with effect size expressed as standardized mean difference and 95% confidence intervals.
