Evaluation of Mood Check-in Feature for Participation in Meditation Mobile App Users: Retrospective Longitudinal Analysis

JMIR mHealth and uHealth April 23, 2021 Huberty, Jennifer, Green, Jeni, Puzia, Megan et al.

A mood check-in feature in the Calm mindfulness meditation app was associated with increased meditation participation among subscribers. In a retrospective longitudinal analysis of 2600 first-time subscribers, the 2019 cohort (which had access to mood check-ins) completed an average of 0.482 more sessions per week than the 2018 cohort. After the feature's introduction, weekly meditation sessions increased by 0.045 sessions among the 2019 cohort, with a larger increase of 0.063 sessions among previously inactive subscribers. Using mood check-ins in one week was positively linked to meditating the next week (odds ratio 1.132), but this effect did not persist beyond one week.
