Adolescents with lower initial self-regulation at both the individual and classroom levels showed greater gains in self-compassion after a 12-week school-based mindfulness program. The study included 2,121 students from 97 classrooms in six Philadelphia high schools. After controlling for gender and baseline self-compassion, higher individual-level self-regulation at pretest predicted greater growth in self-compassion at posttest. However, at the classroom level, students in classrooms with higher average self-regulation at pretest showed less change in self-compassion compared to those in classrooms with lower average self-regulation. The program's effect was thus stronger for classrooms with lower initial self-regulation.
