An Exploratory Study of Meditation With and Without Immersive Virtual Reality: Effects on Anxiety and Voice-Related Outcomes.

Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation April 27, 2026 Bradley Hoff, Brittany Palmer, Ümit Daşdöğen

In an exploratory study of 26 patients with voice concerns, meditation with immersive virtual reality (IVR) reduced anxiety more than meditation alone, but the pre-post reduction did not differ reliably between groups. Meditation without IVR improved voice quality (cepstral peak prominence), while meditation with IVR did not. Respiratory-phonatory efficiency (maximum phonation time) did not improve significantly in either group after adjusting for baseline values. Clinical significance was not established for any measure. Attrition was lower in the IVR meditation group. The authors suggest IVR meditation may be a valuable adjunct to voice therapy, with effects differing by outcome type.
