MDMA (ecstasy) rose to become the most popular drug of the 1990s. Although first synthesized in 1912, it was not until the late 1970s that various U.S. groups (students, yuppies, gays, and new agers) began using it. In 1985 it was placed in Schedule I of the U.S. Comprehensive Substances Act, and in 1986 the WHO added it to Schedule I of the Convention on Psychotropic Substances. Its global expansion is linked to specific music and leisure subcultures. In Spain, diffusion passed through five phases: pre-phase (1978–1986), initial phase (1987–1989), popularization (1990–1991), vulgarization and mass consumption (1992–1996), and stabilization (1997–). International and national bodies increasingly seek joint actions to assess the epidemiological magnitude and health consequences and to reduce potential harms.
