This chapter examines Aldous Huxley's final years (1950s–1963), shifting from his earlier warnings about threats to freedom and democracy toward a campaign to protect and expand individual freedom and its creative and ethical potential. After first trying mescaline in a controlled setting in 1953, psychoactive substances (entheogens) became central to his political and educational program. His utopian novel Island serves as the centerpiece of his final political statement.
